Optical Gas Imaging

Optical gas imaging uses a spectrally filtered thermal camera to visualise otherwise invisible gas leaks. It works by measuring the infrared radiation passing through a volume of gas. Each gas has its own spectral absorption characteristics, and many gas compounds will absorb some infrared energy, but only within a certain narrow range of wavelengths. Within this very narrow range, targeted to a specific gas, OGI cameras can visualise where a gas plume exists, which typically looks like a smoke cloud, by blocking the energy from reaching the IR detector. At ValenceOGI, we use the Teledyne FLIR Gx320 ™ OGI camera to visualise and collect precise data for emissions.

The Teledyne FLIR Gx320 ™ OGI camera is a state of the art device to perform optical gas imaging surveys. The Gx320 is specifically tuned to visualise fugitive emissions that are impossible to see with the human eye, so no time is wasted inspecting safe, leakfree components. It is capable of visualising multiple hydrocarbon gases, including methane, ethane, propane which are some of the most abundant gases. The camera is certified intrinsically safe, with ATEX and IECEx certifications for use in hazardous locations,  to meet the international standards of safety as well.

The Gx320 camera has an inbuilt system for quantification, which gives an accurate quantification of the concentration of the leaking gas. This eliminates the need for secondary sampling with a toxic vapour analyzer or similar tool. In addition, the Gx320 does not require close contact with the gas in order to measure emission rates, making it a safer solution for quantifying difficult-to-measure gas leaks.
